Margo Guryan
(Los Angeles, U.S.A)_

Margo Guryan
was born in Far Rockaway, New York, a suburb about fifty minutes drive from Manhattan.   She began studying the piano at the age of 6 years and as soon as she was able to read and write, Margo began to write poems.   And as soon as she mastered some elemental piano, she ‘made up' songs.

After graduating from Boston University of Fine Arts with a degree in composition, Margo's songs were soon beginning to be regularly recorded. However listening to pop music was something of a “no-no” for jazz musicians at the time and it was only after her good friend Dave Frishberg turned Margo onto the pop sensibilities of The Beach Boys that she began writing pop records. Although Margo never originally intended to be a singer herself, she recorded a number of demos of her 'pop songs' to show to “real” pop artists. The interest in these performances led to her 1968 album, “Take A Picture” on Bell Records. Margo's songs have also been covered by many stars, including Bobbie Gentry & Glen Campbell, Claudine Longet, Mama Cass (Mamas & The Papas), St Etienne, Astrud Gilberto amongst many others.... Her fans include Beck and Shirley Manson.

Which brings us up to date with 16 Words, which Margo recorded last year and has very kindly consented to us releasing on Pure Mint. A simple. very funny, and almost annoyingly catchy! satirical 'pop song'. To quote Margo: "I wrote music to George Bush's `16 words' because this allowed me to express my feelings on a multitude of current issues...without writing a word! I found the perfect partner in James Reitano, whose amazing video in potent, if amusing, images went even further by underlining the disaster governments can (and do) inflict."

Not much one can really add to that....

Take A Picture - for those unfamiliar to it -  is a sublime psychedelic/soft/pop album from the late 1960's, which, whilst achieving fairly modest success at the time of its release, has subsequently come to be seen as a true classic of its type and era.  It has been re-released several times over the last few years on both vinyl and CD.  Highly recommended and the original vinyl, very sought after!
